The lack of luminosity from large urban centres and the high intensity of solar collisions in its atmosphere makes the Iceland one of the best spots to see the Aurora Borealis.
The very first question that people do to me when I talk about hunting northern lights is “What did you feel at seeing them?”, my answer: freezing!!
Apart from that, it’s a very special moment. When you notice that the whole sky is covered by colorful lights you get speechless!
1 – Best time to see them
From October to March, the night time duration is higher, helping to have potential opportunities to find the lights. Visit Iceland in the last weeks of February which is less cold, and the intensity of the northern lights still very good.
2 – Climate Conditions
We basically need 3 mains factors to have possibilities to see the lights:
a) cloudless sky, otherwise we’ll have views like the picture below;
b) completely darkness sky and;
c) high intensity activities of northern lights (you can follow the forecast using specialised websites, by clicking here you can access one of them )
Try to stay at least 5 days on the country, it’ll maximize your chances to have perfect climate conditions.
3 – Hunting them
The best way is renting a car and driving through the country. Use a forecast map to guide yourself in search to the lights (this is one of the bests). If you’re afraid of driving under snow or winds conditions, you can hire a tour made by specialised companies. At this link here, you’ll be able to find plenty of them.
4 – Taking pictures
Unfortunately, forget the camera from your mobile phone. So most important: you need at least a semi professional or a camera which is possible to use at Manual mode.
Don’t use flashes! Never! It doesn’t work 🙂 Actually, it’ll disturb other photographers around.
Second one: tripod! To take pictures from aurora borealis you need to close the shutter from your camera then have long exposure shots. Without a tripod your pictures will be a disaster.
You can find here a great step by step into configure your camera to have best pictures!
